The Broken Circle Breakdown tops European Film Awards nominations

It seems there is still a lot of celebration left for The Broken Circle Breakdown. The European Film Academy has announced the nominees for the European Film Awards, and Felix van Groeningen’s LUX Prize nominee The Broken Circle Breakdown tops the list of candidates with no less than five nominations.
Van Groeningen has been nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay (alongside co-writer Carl Joos), and, of course, Best Film. But he is not the only one in the race. Leads Veerle Baekens and Johan Heldenbergh vie for Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively.
The heartbreaking melodrama has convinced the Academy voters, who have decided to turn it into this year’s favourite contender. With these five nominations, the film is on top of others such as Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grande Bellezza (LUX Prize 2013 - Official Selection), François Ozon’s In the House or even Abdellatif Kechiche’s Golden Palm winner Blue is the Warmest Colour.
Good news also for Valeria Golino’s Miele, another LUX Prize finalist, which has been nominated for the European Discovery – FIPRESCI prize. The award honours the best first feature film produced in Europe.
Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant hasn’t shown up in the nominees, but it has some other reasons to celebrate: it garnered seven nominations in the British Independent Film Awards.
Will The Broken Circle Breakdown make a clean sweep? The awards ceremony will take place in Berlin on December 7. Do not miss it!
