"Sous les pavés la plage"* ... In 1968, unrest on streets in France and elsewhere in Europe marked by numerous slogans that have since entered the every-day language, was first of all a reflection of a flurry of ideas. It radically modified not only individual and social connections but also their forms.

Since then, cinema has been created differently and the Directors' Fortnight born in this new spirit explores with brilliance, loyalty and without a competitive aim all forms of cinematographic creation. They are praised for having discovered films and authors that became legendary.

The European Parliament Film Prize, i.e. the LUX Prize (in Latin, lux means light), is honoured to appear this year for the first time among the institutional partners of the Directors' Fortnight; this latter and the LUX Prize both have in common the desire to set foot in unknown territories.
