Valeska Grisebach’s Western is nowhere near finishing its successful journey. The 2017 LUX Prize finalist is now visiting January’s most prominent European festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

The film is set to be screened on 27 January (15.30, Kino 1), 28 January (18.00, Cinerama 1), 30 January (18.15, Doelen Willem Burger Zaal) and 2 February (20.30, Pathé 4), as part of the Voices section. And Valeska Grisebach will be present.

The movie was one of the film critics’ most beloved titles of 2017. On top of the rave reviews it received upon its world premiere in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section and the festivals where it subsequently played, the prestigious Sight & Sound magazine placed it in fifth place in its list of the best films of the year, based on the picks of 188 international critics and curators. According to the publication, “Valeska Grisebach’s stunning existential study of masculinity tips its hat to classic genre cinema even as it casts an extraordinary troupe of non-professional actors as its grizzled migrant construction workers in a foreign land.”

As a reminder, Western follows a group of German workers who set off to a construction site in the border region between Bulgaria and Greece – a foreign land that awakens the men’s sense of adventure, but also forces them to face their own prejudice and mistrust owing to the language barrier and various cultural differences.
